Saw palmetto is one of the most widely-consumed natural supplements among men—but can it be beneficial to women too?

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens/Sabal serrulata) is a palm-like plant with berries native to North America. It has been widely revered for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. In fact, saw palmetto berries were both a food and a medicine for Native American tribes throughout the Southeastern United States since long before the first Europeans arrived here hundreds of years ago.

As white settlers arrived in the United States and migrated towards the south, men found that saw palmetto berries helped to treat urinary tract problems, which were very common during the early settler days. As a side benefit, the men noticed that saw palmetto berries helped to increase sperm production and even to boost libido.

And while men still consume saw palmetto for its libido-boosting properties, today, it is primarily used as a natural therapy to help maintain a healthy prostate and to prevent non-cancerous benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). But unlike many natural remedies on the market, saw palmetto is one of the few grounded in fact and research.

As an example, research from the University of Maryland, indicate that saw palmetto can impede the growth of tumor cells in lab animals, indicating that it may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer. Other studies show that saw palmetto really does improve urinary tract symptoms related to BPH.

Researchers have not yet been able to pinpoint exactly how or why saw palmetto works to improve prostate health in men. However, most experts tend to agree that its active ingredients, which include fatty acids, plant sterols, and flavonoids, help reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system.

Specifically, many researchers point to saw palmetto’s fatty acids and phytosterols as being of particular interest for the health-boosting properties.

Its major fatty acids include laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, linoleate and its major phytosterols include campesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol. In particular, saw palmetto extracts are unique compared with other extracts and vegetable and nut oils in that they are a rich source of the saturated, medium-chain fatty acids laurate (12:0) and myristate (14:0).

It is theorized that this unique, natural combination of fatty acids and phytosterols, as well as its other bioactive components, may be responsible for the beneficial effects reported from saw palmetto supplements.

What Benefits Does Saw Palmetto Have on Women

Recently, researchers have begun to explore the potential benefits saw palmetto could have for women as well as men. Many experts say that saw palmetto can potentially have a number of benefits for women, most of which stem from its hormone-balancing properties.

Among women who regularly consume saw palmetto supplements, some note that taking the supplement has helped to increase breast size and even improved milk supply in nursing mothers. Other women have reported that saw palmetto may help regulate periods, reducing cramping, minimize hair loss and even reduce or eliminate flare-ups of acne.

In men, researchers frequently look at saw palmetto benefits from the perspective of its impact on testosterone and the male sex organs. In women, the perspective is often the same, with saw palmetto research emphasizing its estrogenic activity and subsequent impact on the ovaries, the primary female sex organ. Estrogen is the female hormone produced in the ovaries.

In terms of breast enlargement, some researchers have speculated that increased estrogen can indirectly result in more naturally plump and perky breasts. Similarly, lactation (milk production) is driven by a combination of various hormonal factors, many of which are positively impacted by saw palmetto supplementation. By promoting healthy hormonal balance, saw palmetto consumption can potentially improve a woman’s ability to produce milk after childbirth.

Although researchers may not be able to say exactly why saw palmetto works so well in improving the health—one thing is certain—generations of men have sworn by its amazing health-enhancing properties and now it appears that women are poised to benefit as well. In an age where so many ‘cures’ turn out to be nothing more than hype, you owe it yourself to take advantage of saw palmetto, one of nature’s most effective natural remedies for enhancing health.
