Can Saw Palmetto Help Prevent Hair Loss

Male pattern baldness (MPB) is one of the most troubling and perplexing non-life threatening challenges men around the globe face today. MPB is related to a combination of genes and male sex hormones. Most men experience some degree of hair loss or MPB as they get older.

For some guys, MPB can begin while they are in their teens while other men may have a nearly full head of hair well into their sixties or seventies.

Typically, MPB first begins to show up at the hairline, causing it to recede, with the hair becoming finer, shorter and thinner. Eventually, a pattern of hair loss appears around the sides and/or top of the head. In general, hair loss occurs when the hair follicles begin to shrink, which causes the hair to become shorter and finer. Over time, the follicles stop growing new hair and baldness takes over.

The follicles don’t die, indicating that it is possible to grow new hair.

In fact, there are a number of medicines that have been shown to actually bring about regrowth in hair loss. These include Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar). Minoxidil is a lotion and Finasteride is a pill.  However, although both of these medicine have been shown to be effective in slowing or even reversing hair loss in some men, both have drawbacks and side effects.

In fact, the use of Finasteride has been reportedly linked to loss of sex drive and even shrinkage of the penis. Users of Minoxidil mostly complain about the cumbersome, time-consuming application process and the lingering, somewhat obnoxious odor.

What Can Men Do Who Are Concerned About Hair Loss And Don’t Want Bad Side Effects

Desperate man for his baldnessThere is an all natural, effective and easy-to-use approach and it’s called Saw Palmetto.

Saw palmetto (serenoa repens) is a low-growing palm-like plant that produces flowers and berries. For centuries, the berries been used to treat a variety of health and medical issues, particularly those affecting men.

The fatty acids found in saw palmetto berries appear to have the ability to block an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is believed to be a driver of several health issues common among men, including hair loss and MPB.

Saw palmetto’s effects on DHT production have led to saw palmetto being used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men as well as numerous other male health issues, including hair loss. Interestingly, saw palmetto is one of the few natural remedies that actually has scientific evidence demonstrating its ability to have a positive impact on various health issues that are especially common among men.

For instance, studies show that saw palmetto usage over two years (320mg) appears to increase hair growth on the crown in 38% of users with male pattern baldness, a response rate that was less than 1mg finasteride (benefiting 66% of users and also improving hair growth in the frontal region).

Specifically, many researchers believe that saw palmetto berries may block 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, which as we know, is believed to be a key driver of hair loss and MPB among men.

Because men have much higher levels of testosterone than women, they are far more likely to suffer from hair loss and baldness than women. By blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the root causes of hair loss and MPB in men are reduced or in some cases, even reversed.

As a nutritional supplement, saw palmetto is available in the following forms:

– whole dried berries
– tablets
– liquid extracts
– powdered capsules

If you are man who is currently experiencing—or is concerned about experiencing—hair loss or male pattern baldness, then you might consider adding saw palmetto to your diet as a nutritional supplement.
